Description
Horn, lacquerware. Japan, 1st half of 19th cent.
The round netsuke is a very unusual work! On the round platform are three written characters as well as a spider and a rat climbing up from the underside. The characters read Kokubunji and mean "old temple in the countryside". On the underside of this netsuke with very good patina, on a small silver coloured pearl-plate, is the signature HO-SEN.
The small inro with two levels holds a number of various characters in seal script on the outside, rendered in golden hiramaki-e. On the inside of the inro, golden nashiji. Small ovoid chord fastener ojime out of reddish glass.
HEIGHT INRO 6 CM, DIAMETER NETSUKE 4 CM
From a Hungarian private collection
