Shibuichi. Japan, 18th to 19th cent.
Shibuichi kozuka, depicting the upper bodies and heads of two wise men set under prune twigs; with beard and engaged in a discussion, one holding a scroll; the depiction is carved in relief; very lively execution of facial features, robes, and prune twigs. The obverse side decorated with bowl, fan, and signature SO-YU, possibly an artist from the Terukiyo circle (so-called Yokoya masters in Edo).
