Description
INDIA or BURMA, NAGA, 1st half 20th cent. or earlier.
Cotton, cowry shells, dog hair. Hand-weaving of the Naga, living partly in Burma and partly in India in hardly accessible regions. Noteworthy of all Naga weavings are the radiant richly contrasting colors in a pattern which evolved over generations. The cowry shells are sewn in circles whose centers – also the space between them – present squares embroidered in red colored dog hair. This red is not glaring, but a very beautiful subdued hue with intense effect. Flawless condition and throughout compactly woven, thus making this attractive fabric well-suited as a wall hanging. 154 x 101 cm
From a Dutch collection, acquired in the 1950’s
