Craig met Nicholson and his friend James Pryde in 1894 and they all immediately became close friends. Nicholson and Pryde worked together as "the Beggarstaff Brothers" and Craig commissioned them to design a poster for Hamlet in which he was appearing. This was their first poster to be displayed as such and created quite an impression. Nicholson also taught Craig to engrave on wood.
