Alfred Sisley (French, 1839 - 1899). "Study for "Petit Voiliers"". Original pencil drawing. c1864. Signed in pencil, lower left. Cream wove paper. Very good to fine condition. Provenance: Private collection, Limoges, France. Pencil drawings by Sisley are very rare. We could locate only three auction sales in the past 25 years. A number of the French Impressionists were intrigued by the sailing boats on the Seine. Sisley and Renoir had tackled this theme extensively beginning in 1865. Monet moved to Argenteuil in 1871, and made this one of his preferred motifs, as did Caillebotte some years later. Overall size: 8 3/8 x 5 5/16 in. (213 x 135 mm). Image size: 7 x 4 3/8 in.
