Very good condition with no losses to shell or inlays. Provenance: From a highly important private collection, Mexico City. Dimensions: 3 3/8 in. height x 4 3/8 in. length x 3 1/8 in. depth. Probably from the area around the city of Vera Cruz, Mexico, based on the forms created by prisoners in the San Juan de Ulua prison in that city, though possibly from Jalapa (Xalapa), the capital of the state of Vera Cruz. Intricately carved coconut, good patina, mother-of-pearl inlay overall. Face on one end with a mouth formed by a wedge-shaped hole below a mustache, nose, and mother-of-pearl eyes. Depicts Emiliano Zapata on one side, group of men with sombreros on the other. Adorned with a carved Mexican eagle in the coconut shell and a small eagle carved into the largest piece of mother-of-pearl. An unusual and seldom seen form of Mexican folk art.
