Description
Rare English Tortoise Shell Jewelry Box, early 18th c., with silver appliques, the top compartment opening to a divided red silk covered interior, over double silk lined doors enclosing five small silver clad drawers, with key, H.- 9 in., W.- 9 1/8 in., D.- 6 3/4 in.
Condition
Condition consistent with age and use. Tortoise panels are observed as cracked in several areas, with two cracks going through the center of the front doors. Silver appliques are observed in varying degrees of deterioration, with a few small losses throughout. Applique is slightly lifted in some areas, most noticeable along the frame of the right door. One interior drawer is seen with a white residue, and a brighter finish. Red silk is discolored, especially along the base. Drawers and doors open and close easily. A truly intriguing example.
