Description
This is a group of two vintage 1919 LA GUIRLANDE pochoirs.
1919 LA GUIRLANDE pochoirs. From the article 'FOL AMOUR'. By UMBERTO BRUNELLESCHI and Jean Hermanovits.
Two beautiful pochoirs from the 1919 French publication, LA GUIRLANDE (La Guirlande d'art et de la literature).
A lovely festooned girl by Brunelleschi and secondly, a cupid who is in blindfolds with an arrow through his heart--this darling illustrated by Jean Hermanovits. Both have text on reverse.
SIZE:
Girl: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" (4 1/2" x 7" plate size)
Cupid: 3" x 5" actual size.
La Guirlande was one of the most exclusive of the Paris fashion publications (edition size of only 800) and is quite rare as it was produced in 1919 and 1920 only with a total of 11 issues. Its literary editor was Jean Hermanovits, and the artistic director was the great art deco illustrator Umberto Brunelleschi.
Umberto Brunelleschi:
Born 1879 in Montemurdo in Tuscany, Brunelleschi studied in Florence and moved to Paris in 1900 where he soon established himself as a printer, book illustrator and costume designer. His most famous graphic works were printed using the pochoir technique of stencil coloration that enhanced his vividly colored images.
He was a major contributor to many of the deluxe French fashion publications including "Journal des Dames et Des Modes," "Gazette du Bon Ton" and "Les Feuillets d'Art." Brunelleschi was also the artistic director of the short lived but significant "La Guirlande d'art et de la litterature" (1919-1920). The magazine employed other great artists like Barbier, Benito, Wegener, Zinoview & the Neopolitan artist Mario Cito Filomarino.
In the 1920's he diversified into set and costume designs for the Folies Bergere, the Casino de Paris, the Chatelet and theaters in New York, Italy and Germany. Among his credits include many costumes created for the marvelous Josephine Baker.
