Description
DESCRIPTION: Johnny Gotthard Friedlaender (Polish, 1912-1992). Lithograph. "Composition II". Signed in stone. Matted in wooden frame. Artist biography and work information on back from Ferdinand Roten Galleries in Baltimore, Maryland. Born in Pless (Silesia), his early studies were in Breslau under Otto Mueller. In 1936 he traveled to Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Austria, France and Belgium. At the Hague, he held a successful exhibition of etchings and watercolors. He fled to Paris in 1937 as a political refugee of the Nazi regime. From 1939 to 1943 he was interned in a series of concentration camps, but survived against poor odds. After living and working in Paris for 13 years, Friedlaender became a French citizen in 1950. He received many awards and exhibited all over the world until his death in Paris at the age of 89. MEASUREMENTS: 14-3/4" x 10-1/2". Overall with frame 24-1/2" x 19-1/2". CONDITION: Light toning to matting. Light wear to frame, scratches and dings.
