Description
Americana folk art tavern painting of a woman toasting, oil on canvas relined. Stretcher size 26" x 36" with original frame 32" x 42" high. Unsigned in very good restored condition. From an Iowa collector who purchased it in St. Joseph, Missouri and was told that the painting hung in a Pennsylvania tavern beginning around 1840. The woman in the painting has been suggested to be Molly Pitcher (Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley) who became famous during a Revolutionary War battle in Monmouth, NJ in 1778.
