The Venini rope twist glass framed mirror with bronze rim and cantilevered base is a classic late 1930s Venini design. The circular dressing table mirror was interpreted by many designers working with the Venini workshop, including Paolo Venini and Carlo Scarpa. This example is documented in the Venini Catalog Raisonné 1921-1986.
The mirror is marked “Made in Italy” on the bronze tab. It is in very good condition with a few small losses to the silvered back of the mirror. It measures 15 ¾” x 15” x 5” (height x width x depth).
Venini (est. 1925)
Paolo Venini established Venini, a Murano glass factory, in 1925. Trained as a lawyer, Venini originally partnered with Giacomo Cappellin, opening Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappellin Venini & C. in the islands of Murano, Italy in 1921. However, after disputes, Venini reorganized and created Venini & C. Embracing modernism, Venini & C. glass broke away from the traditional Novencento style vases, incorporating boldly striped translucent designs, elegant shapes and brilliant colors. Designers of Venini have included Carlo Scarpa, Tyra Lundgren, Napoleon Martinuzzi, Gio Ponti, Fulvio Bianconi, and Tommaso Buzzi.
