Description
An excellent Moche V molded vessel from Peru, ca. 550 – 700 AD. This spouted jar portrays a scene from Moche mythology, featuring important supernatural characters engaged in ritual combat. The Bird Demon has captured the Fox or Rodent Demon and is leading him by means of a serpent wrapped around his neck. The Bird Demon is holding a staff or atlatl in one hand and a battle mace, as well as the tail of the serpent, in the other. White kaolin slip is used to highlight various physical attributes.
