This work by Ludwig Bemelmans is a clear illustration of paternal love and responsibility. As the child sits upon the shoulders of the father, we are drawn to feel the relationship between the two figures. A dog follows behind as they are walking through a marshy landscape to a house in the background.

Ludwig Bemelmans (American, 1898-1962)
Ludwig Bemelmans was born on April 27th 1898 in Meran, Austria. After immigrating to the United States in 1914, he served as an officer in the US Army. In 1927 Bemelmans began his studies at the "Thaddeus Studio," crafting his artistic talents. He is best known for creating the Madeleine series in 1939 and in 1953 Bemelmans was awarded the Caldecott Medal from the American Library Association. His work has been exhibited at the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, the Museum of the City of New York, Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris and the New York Historical Society Museum and Library in 2014.
