Yuri Ilya Repin was the son of most renowned Russian artist of the 19th century, Ilya Yefimovich Repin. Yuri studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg. From 1908 to 1939 Yuri Repin lived in Kuokkala beside his father on the estate Penates, located 19 miles northwest of St. Petersburg. Kuokkala was renamed Repino in 1948, after its most famous inhabitant, Ilya Repin. The Penates became an important artistic and literary gathering place in the early 20th century.
