Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 800-1200 CE. Polychrome ceramic pedestaled bowl or frutero painted with symmetrically opposed stylized bird/amphibian-like saurian forms. The ancient artisan employed a color scheme of red and black on cream ground representing a male/female binary with red symbolizing the male and red symbolizing the female. An attractive form with intricately painted abstract design and wonderful root markings! 5.88"W x 9.00"H (14.92 W x 22.86 H cm)
