Mayan Tiquisate Incised Cylinder
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Tiquisate area of Esquintla, Guatemala, Mayan, ca. 4th century CE. An early classic Tiquisate pot or large cocoa cup - early as the decoration is incised rather than mold-impressed. Early Classic Tiquisate pottery features a mixture of local Escuintla motifs, foreign Teotihuacan motifs, and designs borrowed from neighboring Maya areas (the inhabitants of Escuintla in the 4th-6th centuries A.D. were not Mayan). The cylinder is decorated with two panels of weaving/mat/textile glyphs in red and black organized into five registers . These panels alternate with two opposing panels that feature a rendering of the seated "Old God" (Huehuetotl-Xiuhtecuhtli - pronounced: Way-ue-TEE-ottle, and Shee-u-teh-COO-tleh) derived from huehue meaning old, and teotl meaning god - one of the most often represented deities. His image as well as other decorative ornamentation of the piece was created via the skillful application of red stucco. 6.63"W x 6.00"H (16.83 W x 15.24 H cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
