Ralph (Rudy) Crane was a legendary LIFE magazine staff photographer, his works fetch up to €3,500 on the international auction market

Ralph Crane took this panoramic photograph at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles Sports Arena, California on July 15, 1960. During this meeting of the Democratic Party Senator John F. Kennedy officially entered the race for presidency. The present shot depicts an enormous crowd of supporters waving placards reading ‘Kennedy for President’. Skillfully Crane managed to capture the buoyant energy of this memorable event.



The gelatin silver print shows the copyright stamp ‘CREDIT TO READ: Ralph CRANE LIFE MAGAZINE © 1960, 1988 Time Inc. Set # C-60367’ on verso; it also bears the agency stamp ‘GRAZIA NERI’. There are further stamps and handwritten notes. The print is in very good condition considering its age; outside the depiction the corners are a little dog-eared and the surface is party ribbed and soiled respectively. The image size is 11.5 x 24 cm and the size of the sheet is 20.4 x 25.4 cm.



Ralph Crane (1913-1988)

Ralph Crane was born in Halberstadt, Germany in 1913. From the age of 12, he started taking photographs. Later he worked as a freelancer for the New York Times. In 1934 he left his hometown and moved to England and then to Switzerland. Here he worked for several European magazines, newspapers and photo agencies such as Camera Press and Black Star. In 1941 Crane eventually emigrated to America where he became a photographer at the legendary LIFE magazine. For decades, the versatile photographer took color as well as black and white photographs in which he documented current events, portrayed celebrities or captured extraordinary landscapes. (tfa)
