The British painter William Henry Watson (doc. 1899-1915) is recorded mainly for his representations of sheep flocks and herds of cattle in the foggy Scottish Highlands. The present painting depicts a flock of five sheep and a goat in the center. The fur of the animals is rendered with great attention to detail, as well as the surrounding mountain landscape that shimmers in earthy browns and greens. The dense fog, which the artist has captured with great artistic skill, is of particular note.
The painting is signed with ‘W. H. WATSON’ lower right. It is in condition considering its age, showing two small losses of color above the left sheep. The frame shows minor losses. The dimensions of the stretcher are 40.5 x 61 cm, and the frame measures 65 x 84.5 cm.
