Rudolf Ribarz (1848-1904)

A native of Vienna, Rudolf Ribarz was supposed to step into the mercantile occupation of his father, however he began taking painting classes at Josef Holzer at the age of 12. After he completed the commercial academy he enrolled at the Academy of Vienna, where he was taught e.g. by Albert Zimmermann. He saw works by French landscape painters at the Erste Internationale Kunstausstellung in Munich in 1869 of e.g. Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and the School of Barbizon, which led him to move to Paris eight years later. In the meantime he travelled to Italy, Belgium and Holland to further develop his style. Next to Charles Daubigny and Jules Dupré, also the School of The Hague greatly influenced his work. (tm)
