Vivid colored depiction of gorgeously flowering oleander bushes by the German artist Gustav Bauer; paintings by the artist fetch up to more than €3,000 at international auctions

Oleander blossoming in white and deep pink fills the image area of the painting. With loose brushstroke the German artist who was born in 1874 has skillfully captured the opulent flowerage and lush green foliage of the shrubs and made it glow on a ground of modulated shades of yellow.

The painting is signed, inscribed and dated upper right ‘Gust. Bauer Berlin 1899’. It is overall in good condition with craquelure in a small part below, a tiny retouched spot at the upper edge and slight framing traces. Additionally to minor signs of wear the frame bears occasional material losses in the stucco ornaments. The painting measures 60 x 80 cm. The framed dimensions are 84.5 x 104 cm.

Gustav Bauer (1874-circa 1933)

Gustav Bauer studied in 1896 and 1897 at the Allgemeine Malschule in Munich under the American-German painter Carl von Marr. In 1906 Bauer participated in the autumn exhibition in the Künstlerhaus Vienna and was represented in 1924 with 29 works in an exhibition of the Kunstgemeinschaft. Since 1909, Gustav Bauer was a member of the Austrian Association of Artists. In 1933 he worked in Hamburg. Bauer painted landscapes, portraits and decorative works such as room decorations, postcard series and calendar illustrations. His works are also represented on the Natural History Museum Vienna.
