Carl Reichert (1836-1918)

Carl Reichert was born in Vienna. His father Heinrich and two uncles were painters and thus he also studied at the Zeichenakademie in Graz where Joseph Ernst Tunner and Christian Moser were his teachers. Reichert went on study trips to Vienna, Munich and Rome. Initially he painted mainly landscapes and architecture. But after a successfully executed job for dog portraits, he turned increasingly to animal painting. Under the pseudonym J. Hartung, he mainly painted portraits of dogs and horses which enjoyed great popularity. He took part in the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873 with four dog portraits. Since 1874, Reichert was a member of the Vienna Art Society. His paintings have been shown in numerous exhibitions. (fea)
