Historicized painting in an almost Arcadian landscape and gallant appearance of the soldiers in the Thirty Years’ War
The painting originates from an unknown monogrammist from the mid-17th century. Depicted is a cavalry battle of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-48). A German riders’ artillery, marked by yellow flags with imperial eagle are handing down the enemy with black flags. A dramatic battle emerges. The Imperial troops are equipped with high boots, slouch hat with feather, some in heavy armored cuirassier, as well as with guns and for the closer attack with sabre. One enemy is already lying on the floor. A riderless horse is running away in the far and some riders are chasing a fleeing enemy. In typical perspective the scene is embedded into a wide landscape with a view and large ruin on a mountain in the background.
The painting is indistinctly monogrammed lower right ‘F/C M/W(?)’. The condition of the painting is good according its age, partly is craquelure visible and the varnish is minimally yellowed. The frame displays normal traces of age and wear. The stretcher measures 53.7 x 72.5 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 70.5 x 86 cm. (tm)
