Dimensions: 110 x 178 cm
Good condition
Provenance: Private collection, Germany
Large-scale market scene with multi-figured compositions; impressive example of Bassano’s circle
The present genre painting is the work of an artist, presumably active in the circle or early following of the Italian master Leandro Bassano. Bassano had an excellent reputation among the artists of his time and deeply influenced the artistic transition to the Seicento. The present market scene is noticeably painted in the tradition of Bassano, whose genre paintings are considered as typical reflections of the mannerism style. As also seen here, the stated aim was to create varied forms and beautiful decorations, rather than to focus on the mere feeling and expression.
The painting surface is browned and shows some areas of restoration. The canvas is relined and has been retouched along the edges. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching to the craquelure. The stretcher measures 110 x 178 cm. The wooden frame shows light traces of age and use. It measures 119 x 187 cm.
Leandro Bassano (1557-1622)
Leandro Bassano belonged to a famous artist’s family and was the son of the Renaissance painter Jacopo da Ponte, called Bassano (1510-1592). He received his artistic training at his father’s studio. In 1589, he presumably already worked in Venice, where he became a permanent resident in 1592, after his father’s and brother’s death. The main focus of his oeuvre constituted portrait painting, whereas he was also commissioned for the decorations of the Doge’s Palace. Besides, Bassano was active in genre painting, as proven by a number of market and carnival scenes. His appointment as Cavaliere may certainly be rated as an expression of his high contemporary importance. (cbo)
