Description
The Fine Burma Campaign MC group of five awarded to Captain Archibald Menzies Ogilvie, R.A.M.C attached to the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire, killed in action. Military Cross lower limb officially engraved 1945, 1939-1945 and Burma Stars, Defence Medal and War Medal, mounted court style by Spink & Son Ltd, Memorial Scroll (Captain A M Ogilvie Royal Army Medical Corps) framed, New Testament, inscribed on the front paste down A.M. Ogilvie Trichy (Tiruchirappali, India) 22/7/43, album of mounted whole plate photographs of Capt Ogilvie's wedding to Miss Margaret Hatton at Runcorn, Cheshire, April 1942, Mrs Ogilvie's silk wedding dress and pewter mug engraved A.O. from 55 DIV.RE APRIL 1942. MC: London Gazette, Supplement, 15 November 1945, page 5575. As M.O. attached to the 2nd Bn. Worcestershire Regiment in early 1945 Captain Ogilvie was involved in the thick of the dense jungle fighting at the Irrawaddy Bridgehead and in the breakout from the Bridgehead which would ultimately lead to Mandalay. In an operation on 12th February, where the objective was the village of Ngasingu, fierce Japanese opposition and difficult terrain with scrub and long grass made for treacherous conditions. Ogilvie was killed whilst giving aid to a wounded man in a very exposed position. The recommendation for his MC, which is dated the day before, reads: "At Ngapyin-in on 22 Jan his Bn was very heavily attacked by the enemy, prior to which they were subject to a heavy concentration of mortar fire. The casualties suffered by the Regt in this action were considerable but this officer's skill and courage in dealing with them were outstanding. He worked cooly and tirelessly under heavy fire tending the wounded with complete disregard to personal safety. He was always cheerful and his bravery and conduct was an example to all ranks and in particular to his medical platoon. Again in the Irrawaddy Bridgehead on 5 Feb, Capt.
