Item Details
Description
FERNAND LEGER 1881-1955
Argentan 1881-1955 Paris, Gif-sur-Yvette (French)
Title: Still Life with Profile, circa 1941-42
Technique: Original Ink drawing on paper
Paper Size: 20.6 x 15.6 cm / 8.1 x 6.1 in
Additional Information: This original drawing in Ink was realised by Leger around 1941-1942.
This drawing relates directly to two paintings painted by Léger in 1941 which are recorded in the Catalogue raisonné of his paintings 1938-1943, (vol. VI), Paris, 1998, No 1075 and 1076, illustrated pages 150 &151.
This work is accompanied by an affidavit signed by Ernest Weissmann on May 1, 1984, which states: “This is an authentic drawing by Fernand Leger, who gave it to me at the time we worked on several murals in private homes of New York's affluent society. The method we used was for me to take a photograph (in color) of a tiny sketch by F.L. and projecting the slide on the wall where the mural was to be painted. After settling on the location, position, size etc., F.L. painted on the basis of key reference points set with the help of the projection. It was very interesting, creative work and a good use of “new technology” (slide/color) in painting.”
Note: Ernest Weissmann was a key figure in 20th Century architecture. He was born in Croatia and went on to work closely with LeCorbusier. While residing in New York City during World War II, the Fernand Leger and architect crossed paths during a series of conventions held by the “Congrès International d'architecutre modern”(CIAM). This would soon lead to collaborative projects.
Provenance: Mr. Ernest Weissmann, who acquired the work directly from the artist.
It was then passed down to his family.
Condition: Very Good Condition. Slight fold in upper margin. Light surface dirt.
