Description
Late 19th century, 202 x 149 cm, South Persia
This white-ground Kerman cover is embroidered in a design of large botehs arranged around a circular medallion with a star-shaped interior drawing. The style of drawing is strongly reminiscent of Indian Kashmir shawls. The question whether Persian textile artists were guided by Indian models, or vice versa, is a matter of controversial discussion in specialist publications. - The ground weave has become brittle in several places, which are torn.
NABHOLZ-KARTASCHOFF, MARIE-LOUISE & BUCHERER-DIETSCHI, P. (eds.), Textilhandwerk in Afghanistan. Filz, Gewebe, Kleidung, Stickerei. (Vol. 3 in the BIBLIOTHECA AFGHANICA series) Liestal 1983, no. 30
