Leo Putz succeeds in his paintings of bathing nudes to capture the magic and light of plein-air painting; comparable nude studies dating 1925 fetch up to €38,000 on the international auction market

This painting was created by the Munich painter Leo Putz in 1925. It is considered a study to the subject of his bathing nudes. People, especially female nudes, are a central theme of his artistic work. Moreover, the motif of bathing women found much of Leo Putz attention and therefor was taken up again and again in many different variations. In addition to that Putz was able to capture the magic and light the plein-air painting has to offer. Paintings with the theme of bathers are quite popular among collectors and achieved, in a slightly larger version, up to €109,000 on the art market.

The painting is signed lower right ‘Putz’ and barely legible inscribed on the back ‘LEO PUTZ (...?)’. It is in good condition. Partially slight craquelure, overall minimally soiled. Tiny dots of retouching at the left edge. Otherwise overall of good impression. The image measures 55.5 x 38.5 cm. Framed dimensions are 68 x 51 cm.

Leo Putz (1869-1940)

Leo Putz was born in 1869 in Merano, South Tyrol. At the age of 16, he took his first art training with his step-brother Robert Poetzelberger. In 1989 he began to study at the Munich Academy and continued from 1891 to 1892 at the Académie Julian in Paris. From 1892 he regularly participated in exhibitions of the Munich Secession. In 1899 he founded with fellow students of the painting class by Paul Hoecker the artists' association ‘Die Scholle’. In 1925 he became an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. The following are long trips to South America, which gave his painting a new, powerful impetus. At the beginning of the Second World War Putz was banned from painting and returned to his home town Merano. (cru)
