Liquidly drawn and rather rare Illustration to the fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; works on paper by the artist Hugo Scheiber up to €30,000 euros at international auctions

The work presented here, carried out in charcoal and gouache on paper, comes from the Hungarian artist Hugo Scheiber. Scheiber’s works mostly deal with Expressionism, particularly the Futurism. Since the 1920s he regularly exhibits at Herwarth Walden in the gallery ‘Der Sturm’. They are characterized by black silhouettes that surround the mostly geometric areas of color. Our drawing also shows the black outlines, which are partially filled with color.

The work is signed lower right ‘H. Scheiber’ and inscribed in pencil verso by unknown hand. It is in good condition. The sheet is slightly wavy and mounted at two outer edges under a mat (reversible). On the right edge minimal imperfections and small nail holes in the left corners. The edges minimally browned, otherwise overall of very good impression. The sheet-sized image measures 60.4 x 60.9 cm. The framed size is 66 x 84.5 cm.

Hugo Scheiber (1873-1950)

Scheiber worked as a sign painter and attended the School of Applied Arts in Budapest from 1898 to 1900. His early works are based on Impressionism. In the 1920s he went to Berlin and came to terms with Futurism and Expressionism. Thematically, he dealt mainly with portraits, life in the big city and the world of cabaret. His works were shown at the Galerie Der Sturm and published in the same named journal. 1926 his paintings were shown in the exhibition ‘Société Anonyme’ in New York. In the 1930s he oriented his work increasingly towards Art Deco. Hugo Scheiber returned to Budapest in 1939, where he died in 1950.

Scheiber's work is represented in numerous exhibitions of Hungarian avant-garde and renowned collections, including the Hungarian National Gallery and the Janus Pannonius Muzeum in Pecs.
