The Hungarian artist Béla Kádár has produced an unique and distinctive oeuvre. The current highest auction record for an oil painting in a similar size is more than €60,000

In many of his paintings, Béla Kádár (1877-1956) praised his homeland Hungary, probably also in the present portrait of two sisters from the time around 1930. The women almost fill the whole painting and feature Kádár’s typical stylized visual language with bright colors. Béla Kádár is today one of the most popular Hungarian artists. Since the 1920s a citizen of Germany, he was influenced by the great avant-garde art movements of Modernism, above all by the works of the German Expressionists.


The painting is signed with ‘KÁDÁR BÉLA’ lower right. It shows some pressure marks from the stretcher and some small color losses due to age. The frame shows minor sign of use. The image dimensions are 44 x 33.5 cm, and the total size, including the frame, is 54 x 44 cm.


Béla Kádár (1877-1956)

Béla Kádár started painting from an early age and studied at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts. As early as 1906, he held an exhibition at the Hungarian National Gallery. After study trips to Paris and Berlin, he left his home in 1918 to live in Germany and France. In 1923, Kádár and his first major solo exhibition in Herwarth Walden’s gallery ‘Der Sturm’ in Berlin and his works were published in the eponymous art journal. Kádár was influenced by the German expressionists, in particular by artists of the ‘Blauer Reiter’. In the 1920s and early 1930s, Béla Kádár showed his works in exhibitions in Budapest, Berlin, Philadelphia and New York. (cko)
