Christian Schad (1894-1982)

Christian Schad was a German painter and important exponent of the New Objectivity and the Verism. His artistic education began at the Art Academy in Munich in the classes of Heinrich von Zügel and Carl Johann Becker-Gundahl. He left the Academy to open his own studio in Munich-Schwabing, where he created his first expressionist works influenced by the circle of the Blaue Reiter. Schad went to Zurich and produced his first Dadaist works, influenced by the foundation of the Dada movement. Here, he supported his friend, the poet Walter Serner, in his magazine Sirius. Schad developed a technique of photograms (Schadographs). From 1920 until 1925, he lived in Italy and made realist portraits. He settled in Vienna from 1925 until 1928, and then moved to Berlin, where he took part in the exhibition ‘Die Neue Sachlichkeit’. It was in Berlin, where he executed his most famous works, which can be allocated to the New Objectivity and the Verism. The Christian-Schad-Stiftung in Aschaffenburg manages his estate. Further works are in the possession of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the MoMA in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and in the Lenbachhaus in Munich.
