Kolo Moser’s oeuvre includes numerous paintings, drawings and sketches of flowers and plants. As an artist of the Art Nouveau, he was fascinated by the floral form, which he initially used in a stylized form for his pattern designs. After leaving the Wiener Werkstätten in 1907, he devoted himself to nature studies. He presumably found his motifs in Semmering, where he spent the summers in his wife's family home. In the present work dated 1909 Moser has rendered the branch of a Chinese holly is an incredibly life-like manner, which showcases his skillful use of color and light. The work is an example of the artist’s painting inspired by nature before his turn to symbolism.



The drawing is signed, inscribed and dated lower left ‘K. Moser / Wien 11.28.1909’. The sheet is mounted under a mat at the top margin. There is a water stain tot the top margin and a tiny hole in the lower right corner. The sheet size is 25.9 x 18.1 cm.




Koloman Moser (1868-1918)

Koloman Moser was born in Vienna in 1868. He studied from 1886-1893 at the Academy of Fine Arts, among others under Franz Rumpler, Christian Griepenkerl and Matthias von Trenkwald. He also created illustrations for magazines such as the ‘Meggendorfer-Blätter’. From 1893-95 he also attended art school where he later worked as a teacher. Moser was co-founder of the Vienna Secession in 1897. His artistic environment included the painters Carl Moll, Ferdinand Hodler and Cuno Amiet. In addition, he has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions.
