This painting, executed in oil on wood, was created by August Heitmüller in the 1920s. Heitmüllers artistic works are painted in the realistic style of the New Objectivity, whereas he was very fond of painting portraits. The painting offered here shows an artist in his studio. Characteristic is the objectivity with which the painter creates the emotionally distant figures as well as the resignation of sensual dynamics.

The painting is in good age-appropriate condition. Centrally slight scratches and a few small nicks in the margins of the image. The surface is slightly soiled, otherwise of good impression. The painting measures 138 x 80 cm, the framed dimensions are 150 x 92 cm.

August Heitmüller (1873-1935)

August Heitmüller was born in 1873 near Hanover. He studied at the School of Applied Arts, and from 1895 at the Academy of Arts in Munich under Franz von Stuck and Otto Seitz. In Berlin he took lessons from Lovis Corinth. In 1917 he was co-founder of the Hanover Secession together with Georg Herting, Fritz Burger-Mühlfeld, Ludwig Vierhalter and Kurt Schwitters as well as with the support of the Kestner Gesellschaft.
