Idyllic landscape by Gustav Wunderwald (1882-1945), a painter of the New Objectivity; he current highest auction record for a work by Gustav Wunderwald is €120,000

A glowing sunset determines this idyllic landscape by Gustav Wunderwald (1882-1945), a painter of the Weimar Republic. Dating from the 1920s, the impasto composition is characterized by three staggered rows of haystacks. The iridescent color fields are rendered without shapes. Only the bright green fields in the middle distance are distinguished from the surroundings. In some parts, the painting depicts influences of the New Objectivity.

The painting is signed ‘G. Wunderwald’ lower left. It is in good condition, showing slight foxing and two patches on the reverse. Inspection under UV light reveals several minor areas of retouching. The gilded frame shows major losses. The dimensions are 44 x 59 cm and the overall dimensions, including the frame, are 51 x 65.5 cm.
