Decorative floral still life in brilliant colors combining elements of Expressionism and New Objectivity

Here the German painter Karl Bärenfänger presented a bouquet of tulips, carnations and daffodils in a green, bulbous vase. Arranged on a round table before a neutral green-grey background, the flowers in bright yellow, red and purple are particularly well staged. The individual flower heads are rendered in an almost sculptural manner with thick impasto brush strokes. In the present work Bärenfänger combines the preference for luminous color combinations and decorative compositions of Rhenish Expressionism with the cool, straight form language of the New Objectivity.

The painting is signed lower right ‘K. Bärenfänger’. It is inscribed on a label on the stretcher ‘K. Bärenfänger, Wellinghofen/W. “Rote Tulpen” (60x50cm No: 192325)’. The work is in good condition with a few tiny stains. There are some scattered retouchings to a few flower heads. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 68 x 58 cm, the stretcher frame measures 60 x 50 cm.

Karl Bärenfänger (1888-?)

Karl Bärenfänger first studied with Johan Thorn-Prikker at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Krefeld, then under Wilhelm Trübner at the Academy in Karlsruhe. Bärenfänger exhibited with the artists’ group ‘Das Junge Rheinland’ and in 1925 he was honored with a solo exhibition by the Aachener Museums-Verein. His motifs included landscapes as well as still lifes and cityscapes. The artist’s oeuvre shows characteristics of the Rhenish Expressionism, but was also influenced by the New Objectivity and his stay at the Académie Ranson in Paris. (tfa)
