In this late painting the French artist has captured in summarizing brushstroke, a still life with a bouquet of flowers. Slightly offset from the center to the right a blue painted vase with a bouquet of lush blooming pink roses is placed on the landscape format. Their fluffy blossoms shine out from the background in shades of brown that is despite of some perspective three-dimensionality ornamentally designed, and thus captivates the view.

The painting is signed and dated lower left ‘P Sérusier 24’. On verso there are three old (exhibition) labels. At the edges there are two tiny paint losses. The painting is overall in good, age-related condition. The frame is in good condition with occasional paint losses. The painting measures 38 x 61 cm. The framed dimensions are 57 x 80 cm.

Paul Sérusier (1864-1927)

Born as the son of well-off parents Paul Sérusier got a classical and scientific education. In 1885 he began to study art at the Paris Académie Julian, where he met Maurice Denis. Sérusier spent the summer of 1888 in the Breton town of Pont-Aven which was very popular among artists. There he met the artist Paul Gaugin, who arouse his enthusiasm for a new type of painting with a rhythmic structure with unmodulated areas of color and lines that have an intrinsic value. Back at the Académie Sérusier could inspire other students. So the artist group ‘Nabis’ was founded, which included besides Séusier and Maurice Denis as theorists Pierre Bonnard, Henri Ibels and Paul Ranson. After successful exhibitions the group broke up slowly from 1899 on. From 1908 on Sérusier taught at the Académie Ranson, in 1927 he also published his art theory scripture ‘ABC de la peinture’.
