The German painter Ferdinand Max painted the present work in 1917. The painting depicts a fresh and light-hearted portrait of a young woman before a mountain scenery within an evocative summer landscape, boasting a subtly differentiated color scheme and an academically accomplished brushwork. Bredt’s later work is characterized by glowing colors and a rather dynamic style. Thus the present portrait is also defined by the white of the dress and the green of the landscape. The woman’s face is painted with a lively translucency and the flowing fabric of the dress is rendered in the most vibrant brushstrokes.
The painting is signed and dated lower right ‘F.M. Bredt 1917’. Overall, the painting is in good condition. The corners are a little rubbed. Some tiny stains to the upper right background. The frame is damaged. The framed work measures 61 x 69.5 cm, the wood panel measures 48.5 x 40 cm.
Ferdinand Max Bredt (1868-1921)
Ferdinand Max Bredt first completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller and then attended the academy in Stuttgart and Munich, where he studied painting under Wilhelm Lindenschmit. During extensive travels through Turkey, Greece and Tunisia, he gathered impressions, which he rendered in many of his works, gaining recognition as one of Germany's leading Orientalist painters. His oriental motifs, nudes and scenes from fairy tales were particularly popular and were exhibited in Berlin, London, Paris and the USA. Bredt’s extensive figurative oeuvre includes mainly oil paintings and watercolors depicting beautiful women in elegant interiors and exotic courtyards settings.
