The Mexican artist is best-known for his stone sculptures; the auction record for a white stone sculpture of a sleeping woman is set at higher than €40,000

This beautiful sculpture is crafted of white half-polished onyx. It is a work by the Mexican sculptor Felipe Castañeda from 1997. ‘La Mujer dormida’ depicts a sleeping woman, with crouched legs, on an oval, integrated plinth. In the center of his sculptural creativity are female depictions, often mestizo and Native American women. In the figural works are next to the model of his teacher Francisco Zuñiga also influences of Medardo Rosso and Aristide Maillol discernible.


The sculpture is signed and dated on the front of the base 'F. Castañeda 1997'. It is in very good condition with slight traces of wear on the plinth. The dimensions are 19 x 50 x 28 cm (height x width x depth).


Felipe Castañeda (b. 1933)

Felipe Castañeda entered the La Esmeralda Painting and Sculpture Academy at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico City in 1958. He began working for the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City in 1962. At this time he also became the assistant of the sculptor Francisco Zuñiga. The artist creates sculptures of marble, onyx and bronze. His commissioned sculptures in public space are located in several Mexican cities and in Palm Springs, California. His works are in the possession of the collections of e.g. the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Art History in Ciudad Juraez, Mexico. He was honored with awards by UNICEF (1980), Israel (1996) and the International Academy of Modern Art in Rom (1998). (tm)
