Petrus Wandrey, who lives in Hamburg, created the work ‘Third Chaos at One Stroke’ in a technique of clear lacquer on plot on chipboard in 1996. With the self-developed art movement of ‘digitalism‘ Petrus Wandrey refers to elements from the world of computers. The artist picks up on the small pixels that shaped the appearance of computer games in the early days, as a design element in the present work. From different sized pixel-like squares he creates abstract pictorial worlds and figurines.
The work is titled and numbered lower left in pencil ‘THIRD CHAOS AT ONE STROKE 3/6’. It is titled, numbered, signed and dated on the back of the frame in black permanent marker ‘THIRD CHAOS AT ONE STROKE 3/6 Petrus Wandrey 1996’. It bears two labels on the back. The work is in very good condition. The dimensions are 111.5 x 125.4 cm and with the frame 113 x 126 cm.
Petrus Wandrey (1939-2012)
Petrus Wandrey studied at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg and then at the Academy of Fine Arts. He worked in various media and created illustrations for record covers as well as newspapers and magazines. Inspired by Dali and Dadaism Wandrey’s work initially showed a surrealist influence. Seeking his own formal language, he eventually found what he was looking for in the world of the early computer games. In 1978 Wandrey proclaimed his ‘digitalism’. In subsequent years various groups of works, including of sculptures, assemblages and images, that combine art and technology emerged. Since the late 1970s Wandrey participated in exhibitions at home and abroad. In 1999 the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig honored the artist with a first retrospective. From mid June 2014 till the end of September a major retrospective titled ‘Digitalism Art – die geniale Welt des Petrus Wandrey‘ is shown in the Spandau Citadel in Berlin. (tm)
