Emil Schumacher (1912-1999) – German painter of the Informel
Signed and dated upper left ‘Schumacher 82’
In blue wooden frame
Dimensions: 61 x 49.5 cm
Good condition
Gestural and informel work by Emil Schumacher of great painterly presence; comparable works on paper from the early 1980s fetch up to more than €28,000 at international auctions
A gestural applied black line network covers the image of this work on paper executed in 1982. It is complemented by equally gestural applied white, brown and strong, almost immaterial glowing blue tones. The application of paint is mostly pastose and worked over in sgraffito technique in some parts. With its irregularly torn edges the image carrier, the paper takes on the informel rejection of organized shape structure. Thus a typical work by the artist is created with great painterly presence.
The work on paper is signed upper left ‘Schumacher 82’. It is in good condition with insignificant shrinking cracks and craquelure in occasional pastose parts. The sheet is mounted into a mat at spots on verso. The frame is in good condition with slight signs of wear. The sheet measures 61 x 49.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 88 x 77 cm.
Emil Schumacher (1912-1999)
Emil Schumacher studied from 1932 to 1935 at the School of Applied Arts in Dortmund and then worked as a freelance painter. In 1939 he was conscripted as a draftsman in an armaments factory and worked there until 1945. After the Second World War, Schumacher again devoted himself entirely to painting, and founded in 1947 the artists' association "Junger Westen". Initially painting representational, he developed during the 1950s an abstraction that lives only in the color, and investigated the intrinsic value and psychological effects of color. In 1959, Schumacher participated at the documenta 6 in Kassel and in 1961 at the Venice Biennale, which helped him to international fame. Schumacher has held professorships at the academies in Hamburg and Karlsruhe and received since 1948 a number of international honors and awards. In his hometown of Hagen a museum is dedicated to him. (fea)
