Erró is one of the leading Icelandic representatives of Pop Art; his large-scale oil paintings fetch up to €840,000 at international auctions

Since the 19060s, Erró has internationally successfully established his artistic trademark of a colorful comic book aesthetic. His compositions reveal superheroes, beach beauties and famous protagonists of cartoons, which he has collected in a huge picture archive for years. His paintings may first appear trivial, but a second glance often unveils a deeper socio-political meaning. The present work is titled ‘The Bodyguard Of The Pope’ and demonstrates a critical interpretation of the pope’s secular authorities. Whether or not he needs such a rather dubious bodyguard to achieve his ambitious goals, is probably rather a question of perspective.

The painting is signed and dated with black felt tip on verso ‘ERRÓ. 2009.’. It is in very good condition and framed in a simple wooden frame. The size of the stretcher is 100.5 x 90.5 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 104 x 94 cm.

Erró (b. 1932)

Between 1952 and 1954 Erró studied at the art academies in Reykjavik and Oslo. In 1958 he moved to Paris, where he soon started to exhibited his works. In the 1960s Erró repeatedly travelled to New York, where he met the American Pop Art scene, including Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist and Andy Warhol. Since then his artistic output has been inspired by Pop Art, Comics and surrealist collage techniques. Erró has participated in numerous international solo and group exhibitions so far. His works reveal paintings, watercolors, prints, sculptures and further objects, which are, for instance, preserved by the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Reykjavik Art Museum. Erró lives and works in Paris, Thailand and Spain today. (cbo)
