This terrestrial globe was made around 1920 by Wagner & Debes in cooperation with the Geografisch Artistische Anstalt Ludwig Julius Heymann [Geografic artistical institution] and depicts the state of the world at the beginning of the 20th century, before St. Petersburg was renamed Leningrad. The globe is made of two parts and is fitted with twelve segments and two poles lithographed in colors. A swivel mount of nickel-plated metal connects the globe to the jointed shaft that is mounted on a stepped, slightly vaulted disc foot. As additional feature railway and steamer lines as well as courses of telegraph cables are displayed.



Below the equator, the globe is inscribed with the maker’s name ‘Erd-Globus von 96 cm Umfang; neu bearbeitet von Dr. H. Fischer; Leipzig; Wagner & Debes, Lehranstalt; Ludwig Julius Heymann; Maßstab: 1:42000,000‘ [Terrestraial globe with a diameter of 96 cm; revised by Dr. H. Fischer; Leipzig; Wagner & Debes, educational establishment; Ludwig Julius Heymann; scale: 1:42000,000]. The piece is in a good condition, partially showing age-related damages. The historically and scientifically valuable terrestrial globes measures 65.6 cm in height.



Geographisch Artistische Anstalt Ludwig Julius Heymann

Ludwig Julius Heymann was born in Breslau, yet in 1861 he moved his bookshop to Berlin where he started producing terrestrial globes in 1883 with the comany’s name Geografic artistical institution Ludwig Julius Heymann. He quickly established his company on the market and was regarded as one of the most important manufacturers of globes in his day. For a longer period employed in the company was Prof Dr. Henry Lange, who reviewed and created the segments. After Heymanns‘ death in 1899, the company was lead on by employees and later by several owners. The company was relocated to Leipzig after the 1st World War and there it merged with Wagner & Debes, the famous publishing house for maps and atlases, especially for schools. (nlu)
