Description
A rare Chimu calero or lime container from Peru, c. AD 1100 – 1450, nicely fashioned from a gourd, the stopper is carved from wood and has a long shaft that serves as the dipper. Ground lime was used to release the alkaloid when chewing coca leaves and this container still retains remnants of lime. L: 5 ¾ in and in excellent condition. Ex Gallatin estate.
