An absolute classic among the designs of the American designer couple with three-piece seat shell on rotary foot

This Lounge Chair, created by designer couple Charles & Ray Eames, took several years of development before it was finally produced in 1956 by well-known manufacturer Herman Miller. Since 1957 it has been manufactured by Vitra especially for the European market. The idea to rejuvenate the club chair with a modern, lighter design was due to the need for large and comfortable seating. So far, the designer duo had mostly designed chairs in the lower price segment.



Lounge Chair and Ottoman are in overall good condition with normal signs of age of and wear. The leather is in places somewhat chapped. The rosewood veneer shows few single scratch marks inside. Dimensions Lounge Chair: 78,5 x 85 x 85 cm . Dimensions Ottoman: 42 cm, 65 x 56 cm.



Charles (1907-1978) & Ray Eames (1912-1988)

Charles Eames (1907-1978) studied at the Washington University in St. Louis and opened his first architecture office in 1930. In 1940, he won the ‘Organic Design in Home Furnishings’-Competition of the MOMA in New York and was named head of the Industrial Design Department of the Cranbrook Academy of Art in the same year. He married his second wife Ray (1912-1988) in 1941 and they became one of the most known and popular design couples of the 20th Century. Their designs for Hermann Miller, for whom they designed complete product lines, were new, unusual and most of them are design milestones.
