Charming subject with a student sitting on a bookshelf; this figure achieved up to €10,000 at the international auction market

Confident women were a popular topic in the Art Deco period. But even when times were quite liberal in the 1920s and 30s, we must not forget however that a female student was then still a rarity. Even more surprising is the fact that this topic is presented in such a lovely ceramic sculpture. The image of a student sitting in contemporary costume and bold pose on the bookshelf must have been something special for the viewer of that time.



The figure is marked underneath 'Lenci MADE IN ITALY TORINO I / XIII' and is provided with the manufacturer's label. It is in very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear such as single, tiny nicks.



Lenci

The Italian company Lenci, founded by Helena König Scavini, introduced its first felt doll in 1919. The success of the artist dolls with a body, head and face made of felt came very quickly. The early models were characterized by whimsical facial expressions. The faces were usually painted by hand. Later dolls were also made of porcelain. In the 1920s some dolls were created after role models of famous characters such as Josephine Baker. Until 1940 the founder was heavily involved in the production. These popular collector’s dolls were produced until 2002.
