Description
[Revolutionary War Era]. Boston Merchant's Journal, c. early 1760s, from the Joshua Henshaw Sr., and Joshua Henshaw Jr. family; distillers in Boston, who moved to Dedham MA at the start of Siege of Boston (April 19, 1775 – March 17, 1776). Journal passed to Elizabeth Henshaw Dodge (9-5-1775 to 9-8-1861) the second wife of Nathaniel Dodge, married 2-26-1822. EH Dodge used the journal as a scrap book (dates incl. 1-1-1851) and overlaid the pages with magazine and newspaper articles, maps and broadsides. Visible journal entries show the names of the Henshaw's clients incl. Boston and Rev. War notables Nathaniel and Benjamin Greene, Hon. Cotton Tufts, Esq., Col. Joseph Jackson, (another Boston distiller), Charles Apthorp, William Mollineux, Samuel Huntington and Jane Eustis. Size approx. 16" x 11", contemp flexible covers, with spine cracked from pages & some sections loose, few leaves separated; some yellowing and edgewear. Signed by Elis. Henshaw Dodge in several places incl. front & rear covers and interior pages.
