Description
- Charles H. Taylor, Union Brigadier General, 38th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, New York State Militia, Founder of the Boston Globe - Union Portraits by Gamaliel Bradford. Scarce association copy of Union Portraits, an in depth look at some of the figures of the Civil War, inscribed to Admiral Folger from Chas H Taylor, Dec 9, 1918. Very good hardcover, blue cloth with gold lettering on front cover and spine. Ex-library with handwritten label on spine, library ink stamps to title page and page 199. Remnants of card holder and date due sheet to inside back cover and rear end page. Spine darkened a bit, light wear to spine head/foot and corners. Charles H. Taylor fought in the Civil War at 16 years old and became the founder and publisher of the Boston Globe for over 50 years. Admiral William M. Folger , US Navy, commanded the Philippine Squadron in the early 20th century. Boldly signed on one of the front free end pages. Charles Taylor enlisted in the 38th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and served under General Nathaniel Banks. The regiment saw its first combat during the Battle of Fort Bisland in southern Louisiana. During May and June 1863, the 38th Massachusetts took part in the Siege of Port Hudson and the assaults on that city on May 27 and June 14, suffering considerable casualties. After the surrender of Port Hudson on July 9, the regiment participated in the ill-fated Red River Campaign. Charles Taylor was severely wounded in the attack at Port Hudson, and spent three months in a New Orleans hospital recovering. In his New York Times Obituary, it indicated that he lived the rest of his life with a bullet in his body taken during that battle at Port Hudson.
