Description
Europe, French or British, WWI, ca. 1917-1918. Beautiful brass trench art. What appears to be a 75 mm French or British artillery shell casing (the base cannot be read) transformed into a vase with incised representation of a male fantasy rendered in Art Nouveau style. The artist depicted a male lying in bed, dreamy eyed because he is in the company of two female nudes, one standing in profile position holding a butterfly net, the other sitting at his bedside petting an animal, perhaps a dog. This is an unusual example in that the artist embossed the piece with this genre scene rather than the usual flowers and ivy found on most trench art vases. Adding to its uniqueness, the piece stands on three bullet legs - each one comprised of three 45 caliber bullets. 15.00"H (38.10 H cm)
