1½pp. on 4-page letterhead with large decorative woodcut "Happy New Year 1857 to All at Home" with the California state seal, covering the top half of the first page. With envelope bearing a 10-cent stamp and a faint Grass Valley, California, postmark. Letter is 25x19.5 cm. (9¾x7¾").



Sullivan writes a spontaneous letter to his brother upon being presented with the attractive letterhead, which is signed in the block by T.C. Boyd, San Francisco, and published by the Noisy Carrier 's Book &; Stationery Co., Battery St. and Long Wharf, S.F. He speaks a little about the mails, and notes "I have not seen the New York papers yet, but a telegraph dispatch says that Buchanan is elected President I am sorry about that. I was in hopes that Fremont would get it..."
