Rare brochure for "The Peninsula" - A Twentieth Century Hotel, American and European, "Just a Half-hour 's Ride from San Francisco" on the Southern Pacific. The elegant hotel was built as a private mansion in 1886 by gold-mining millionaire Alvinza Hayward. After Hayward died in 1904, the mansion and 15 acres of its beautiful ground were sold to a local group for $125,000, and more than $300,000 were poured into remodeling and renovation so that 300 people could be accommodated in its 122 rooms. The hotel opened Feb. 22, 1908 amid much excitement, pomp and ceremony. After several closures due to financial difficulties, it re-opened for a final time in April of 1920, only to burn down on June 15 of that year, never to be rebuilt.
