"...last night some daring thieves effected an entrance into the Banking House of Messrs. W.Nisbet &; Co. of this city and by means of crow bar and pick axe forced their way into the valt and Iron safe in the cellar and extracted thereform some $30,000 in money chiefly in Bank notes. This heavy robbery it is supposed will cause a suspension or failure on the part of W.&; Co...." The Nisbet firm is well known to philatelic collectors because of their use of the very rare (and costly) 1845-46 St. Louis "Bear" postage stamps.
